The Problems With Residential Solar Power & Wind Power Systems

Homeowners have increasingly considered alternative power systems. Most reviews have been in the advantage side, championing these power systems. But what about the cons? Here are some disadvantages of residential solar power and residential wind power systems that would hopefully give homeowners a more balanced view before they install a home power system to save energy.

Residential solar power systems: the cons
The disadvantages of solar power are mostly economic and technical in nature.  Economic disadvantages include the cost, of course. You would need to buy and install solar panels to get a sufficient amount of electricity. These solar panels do cost quite a fair bit of money. Moreover, you may need mirrors to reflect all of the sun’s rays into the panels, especially if the panels are not titled in a good angle.  Maintenance of this system will also incur additional cost.

Mechanical cons of a residential solar power system include its uselessness at night. This system is unreliable in places with temperate climate. Moreover, solar panels also absorb ultraviolet rays when it absorbs sunlight, and UV rays may ultimately damage the panels.

Residential wind power systems: the cons
Wind power systems may prove not to be cost competitive compared to other alternative sources of electricity. A higher initial investment is required to install a residential wind power system, the return of investment may not be realized until 20 years later.

Wind sites are located far from where electricity is mostly utilized, which is usually often in the cities. Wind energy cannot be stored unless batteries are used.  Moreover, when it is needed the most, wind may be unavailable, and renders the system useless.  Aesthetic considerations, plus the noise and vibrations that wind turbines bring should also be considered.

These disadvantages may be eliminated as technologies for wind and solar power evolve. That we are certain. In any case, it is still worthwhile to start looking at a residential solar power and wind power system now.
